The Lincoln Center Festival and the Mayfield estate will be putting on a 70th birthday tribute to the late Curtis Mayfield on July 20. This one night event will pay homage to the iconic Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member whose pop, soul, funk, and R&B music, served as a soundtrack to the civil rights movement.
A roster of special guest artists from across decades and styles—including Mavis Staples, Aloe Blacc, Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and more…The Impressions, the inimitable vocal soul group Mayfield led early in his career, along with a 14-piece house band under the musical directorship of guitarist Binky Griptite of the funk-infused Dap-Kings.
Mayfield, who was known for songs such as, Gypsy Woman, People Get Ready and Super Fly, died in 1999 at age 57, nine years after he was left paralyzed from the neck down by a tragic accident during a concert in Brooklyn.
The concert will be in celebration of the launch of the Curtis Mayfield Foundation, created by the Mayfield family as a way to help disadvantaged youth realize their musical dreams.
